Samsung nurtures young Bada technopreneurs

Developing Malaysian into a knowledge-based nation through bada Developer Varsity Challenge

Kuala Lumpur, 2 December 2010 – Four varsities emerged as finalists to showcase their most innovative Applications based on bada - Samsung’s new, open smartphone platform - in the finale of the bada Developer Varsity Challenge 2010.

The challenge supported by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), saw students using their creativity and ingenuity, to develop bada applications for social networking, location-based service (LBS), education and even for religious activities.

Bada enables applications to fully utilize the powerful hardware by providing various Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for interactivity including UI elements, 3D Graphics, Flash, multipoint-touch, sensors and motion support. In addition, service-oriented features such as social network integration, LBS and in-application-purchase, allow users to experience a variety of applications and content.

"Samsung is fully committed to creating opportunities for developers to leverage on the success of the bada platform. The bada Developer Varsity Challenge 2010 is aimed at nurturing young Malaysian ‘bada technopreneurs’ by providing an avenue to develop creative and value added applications for consumers,” said Mr. Yu Jai Sul, Managing Director, Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

"Samsung is actively constructing a total eco-system around the bada platform including Samsung Applications, making our platform vision a reality for consumers, developers and operators to experience the freedom of choice that bada enables,” added Mr. Yu.

Samsung’s vision for the Smartphone era is defined by a revolution both in hardware and software, operator-friendly practices and open development. The result is bada, Samsung’s open smartphone platform that will define our success worldwide.

"MDeC is committed to the continued development of the ICT industry in reaching the nation’s goal as a developed country in 2020. With that in mind, we support the initiative by Samsung in delivering cutting-edge technologies to Malaysia’s ICT industry and the public,” said En. Saifol Bahri Shamlan, Vice President, MDeC.

The inter-varsity bada Developer Challenge included a series of roadshows to showcase bada and Wave smartphone at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (UTAR) Kampar and Setapak campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Sunway University College, Management & Science University (MSU). There were also three bada workshops organised together with MDeC and attended by varsities at MSC Cybercentre, Plaza Sentral and GoMobile 2010 Expo.

The entire challenge took three months of intense brainstorming and programming. It received a total of 22 registrations from 18 varsities all across Malaysia. Each team consisted of one advisor and three students to inculcate team work and synergy among lecturers and students.
